FL is a range of urban distribution trucks manufactured by Volvo since 1985. The Volvo FL won the “Truck of the Year” award in 1986. With GVWR from 12 to 18 tons, it is the make’s smallest truck. It is available with different axle configurations, from 4X2 to 8X6.
“FL” is a mix between “Forward Cab” and “Low-level Cab”. The low cab can be short, comfort or double ; it was redesigned in 2000. The Volvo FLC, lighter truck (7.5t instead of 10t) was launched in 1997. In the USA, the Volvo FL was called the “FE” (“Forward Control” and “Economy”), but the production was stopped in 1998, having failed to success.
The second generation of the Volvo FL trucks launched in 2006, the third one was introduced in 2013 and meets the Euro 6 norm requirements : the new FL are equipped with either a 4-cylinder D5K engine or 6-cylinder D8K engine, ranging from 210 to 280 hp. They have the automated I-Sync transmission and the EGR system (Exhaust Gas Recirculation).
